Building Bridges

May 26 opportunity to talk about institutional racism

Structural and Unintentional

Racism in Medicine

12:30 pm - 4:30 pm  May 26, 2010

At MAHEC, 501 Biltmore Ave, Asheville

Audience: Health and human service professionals

What Are We Doing Wrong?

How can it be that health and human service professionals
and organizations, all with good intentions, are failing in our
efforts to provide the highest quality of care and services to all
our patients and clients? The evidence amassed over the past
decades is unmistakable; racial and ethnic health disparities
are pervasive and deeply troubling. This four hour course will
be a first step for those attending to understand healthcare
disparities and to realize the power each of us has to influence
personal and organizational change to bring equity to health
and healthcare for all. This program is intended to begin
addressing institutional racism, not personal transformation.
It is designed for community members to participate as members of
institutions.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

1. Explain institutional racism and provide at least one example of how institutional systems can grant access or create barriers to access for different patients and clients

2. Explore how the everyday culture and organizational practices contribute to the formation of health disparities

3. Begin to recognize “how power works,” and list at least one example of each of the following:

• Consensual power
• Productive power
• Coercive power
